Southern HomeSouthern Trailfest 2003

Report by Stefan Roth

With our extensive experience organizing the large Dixie Run 4-wheeling events at Tellico, we added a spring event in 2003: Southern Trailfest! (Note that the original event name was Dixie Run Windrock.) On the dates of May 2-4, 2003, the weather was great (except for a brief downpour on Saturday) with lots of sunshine and moderate temperatures. We had three exciting days of trail riding, from mild to totally wild trails.

Coal Creek OHV Area is huge: 72,000 acres (10 times the size of Tellico). There are literally dozens of trails. More will be opened in the future. Coal Creek OHV Area is also known as Windrock.

We built a new headquarters campground. This is where we had the Friday and Saturday night dinners (more on that later) and the vendor alley.

The registration desk was manned by Plum Crazzed Jeep Club.

The Extreme Ridge Runners club hosted a flat fender Jeep (1941-1955) trail rides for all levels of modified Jeeps. The Scrambler Association hosted a Jeep CJ-8 (Scrambler) trail ride and the turnout was large!

Trail Riding

Trail riding is what our events are all about. At Coal Creek OHV Area, you can enjoy every type of trail to your hearts desires. There are miles and miles of trails.

The three days of family-oriented trail riding offered a choice of reasonably easy trails for the enthusiast that drives a mildly modified vehicle all the way up to extremely hard trails that are expected at our events.

Sometimes you gotta

At Coal Creek, we offer levels of trail difficulty:

Varmit - Slightly modified vehicles
Predator - Modified vehicles with 31" mud tires
Beast - Modified vehicles with 35" tires

Rattle Rock trail

Rattle Rock is an extremely difficult trail. It's made up of BIG boulders up a mountain side. Large tires and dual lockers are a must. The trail attracts expert drivers from all around the country and lots of crowds to watch you make it or break it.

Friday Night Dinner

Rock Solid Jeep Club volunteered and stepped up to the plate to serve a plate - full of food that is! Home cooked hamburger and hot dogs cooked right on the grill in front of you, including all the fixin's, chips and drinks.

The menu was hamburgers with buns, pickles, mayo, ketchup, tomato, onion, lettuce, cheese. Or if you prefered, hot dogs with buns, mustard, and relish. Served with assorted chips, Coke, Sprite, DP, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, water, and a lot of ice!

Rock Solid has a reputation for eating well and now we know why:

Saturday Night Dinner

You thought your mom is a great cook? Well, she probably is, but can she cater it in a campground for a large group of hungry 4-wheelers? The Middle Tennessee Trail Runners served up a fully home-cooked meal of unbelievable quality and taste. Look at these pictures:
