We (members of Southern 4WD Association) took the members of the Tennessee OHV Committee, some Forest Service personnel, and other interested parties (over 20 people) on a trail ride at Tellico on May 7, 2000 to educate them about organized 4-wheeling and the volunteer work that we perform to maintain the trails that we ride on. This OHV area is actually in North Carolina, but nothing equivalent exists in Tennessee. Many people from Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and indeed from around the country, come to Tellico for the great trail riding. This represents a bunch of tourist dollars that North Carolina gets and that Tennesseeans carry out of state.
SFWDA members annually perform about $30,000 - $50,000 worth of volunteer labor at Tellico. This includes man hours, equipment usage, and materials supplied by Southern. Without Southern's extensive efforts, Tellico probably could not remain open.
