Southern HomeD. A. Young Appreciation

by Stefan Roth

In the early morning hours of May 10, 2006, founding member and beloved friend D.A. Young passed away after a difficult illness. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

The following announcement appeared in the March 24, 2006 edition of the Oak Ridger newspaper:

The public is invited to come and enjoy a day on the mountain. The D.A. "Driver" Young Appreciation Ride will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Coal Creek OHV (off-highway vehicle) Area at Windrock Mountain. At the same time they can help pay tribute to a special man: D.A. Young.
Bring your four-wheel drive, your ATV (all-terrain vehicle), your family, and your enthusiasm. Trail rides for all skill levels will be led by RattleRock 4WD Club. A big breakfast will be served on Saturday morning, and event t-shirts will be sold for $10.
Registration begins at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Windrock Campground and continues Saturday at 7 a.m. All donations are gratefully accepted. Commemorative dash plaques will be given for donations of $50 (silver), $100 (gold) and $500 (chrome).
D.A. is one of the few people that is directly responsible for the fine four-wheeling at Tellico and Windrock, but his driving days may be numbered. D.A. is fighting to overcome astrocytoma, an inoperable cancerous brain tumor.
All proceeds from the event will go to the D.A. Young Special Account at American Fidelity Bank. Donations can be sent to the bank at 2747 East Broadway Avenue, Maryville, TN 37804. For more information visit the Website www.rattlerock.org.

The following announcement appeared in the Fall edition of our Trail Mix newslettter:

Long-Time Four-Wheel Drive Vounteer Passes Away
A sad note was that D A Young, one of the founders of Southern Four Wheel Drive Association, member of Rattle Rock 4WD Club and a long time volunteer and supporter, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in January.
To help with medical expenses, the Rattle Rock 4WD Club started a fun raising drive, culminating in the D.A. Young Appreciation Ride on March 25. Donations to the fund from friends, family, club members, and other generous people exceeded $34,000, plus $5,150 matching funds donated by Southern Four Wheel Drive Association. D.A. passed away in the early morning hours of May 10.
We appreciate your generocity, and your caring hearts at this time, and we know that DA and his family appreciate each and very one of you as well.

Hello Everyone,
We are completing the records for the D.A. Young Special Fund that has been sponsored and administrated by the Rattlerock 4WD Club. Southern agreed to match all club donations up to $500.00 with a $7,500 cap on the total match. As of this date, we have records of the following clubs donating. The clubs listed with $500 in most cases gave much more than $500. I know D.A. and his family appreciate the support of each individual person, each club, and the association.
