Cleanup DayMarch 10, 2007
by Stefan Roth
Hello, I have finally gone through the list of folks and thought you'd like a breakdown of the groups. We had 212 participants who picked up 213 bags of trash. North Carolina had 2400 lbs of trash as well.
Thanks again for all your help and we'll do it again next March 8, 2008 if that date is acceptable. The following is a list of participants (there are were also several individuals not affiliated with a group): Sequoyah Hiking Club (Madisonville, TN)

| Gerald Henderson reports that the RattleRock Club had 17 folks at the cleanup day and picked up trash on trail 6 and the Peckerwood trail. They collected 20 bags of trash and a door from a full size truck. | ![]() Lining up alongside the road in the morning |
| Wayne Kickels worked on the main road (#1) from the bridge at the bottom of trail 2 for about 5 miles and only picked up 4 to 5 bags. Wayne drove about 75 miles to get to the fee area. He spent about 4 hours of cleanup and reports that there seemed to be less trash along the road than in other years. | |
| Cumberland Off-Road had 5 people in attendance and we cleaned along trail
1 from state line to lower 2, trail 5 to the crossing, 12, 11, top of lower
2 and upper 2. As for unusual items, we found the largest brand of beer
to be Michelob, not the usual 4wheeling beer and a Hummer H2 with bling
wheels and covered in blue masking tape to keep it from getting scratched. - Chris Knox |

Carter Wexler wrote: I cleaned Trail 1 with one member of the Southeast Tennessee Axletwisters - Heath Bennett. We also had one Axletwister prospect with us - Chuck. I am a member of both Georgia Bounty Runners and the Axletwisters. Heath and Chuck also picked up a little on Trail 4 and 5. Some of the more interesting items we found were:

Chuck, Helen and son Beach Davis of Tellico Cabin Rentals used their Rhino to winch a dish washer up an embankment along trail #1:

| Rock Solid Jeep Club had 6 members walk roughly 5
miles and collect 7 full bags of trash. We walked up the gravel road nearly
to the top of Lower 2 and back. Then, we walked Lower 2 and back. |

David Borum reports that Smoky Mountain Trailrunners did trail 5 and trail 1 along with some other clubs.

David Russell reports: Southern Land Rover Society (SOLAROS) had 6 members at the clean-up and picked up 20 bags of trash, a windshield and 2 tires. Stayed around SLICKROCK the whole time. We will be participating in the future clean-up days. Everybody had a good time. |

Tim Welpott wrote to us: All in all a good turn out by clubs all over the south. Many people, many hands making light work. Good news is their appeared to be less trash than last year. The picture of the trash truck was taken at 12:15 prior to it making the roadside pick-up runs. Well organized with the Forest Service very appreciative of the turnout and assistance. |
Rocket City Rock Crawlers had the following folks participating: We picked up trash at the intersection of Upper 2 and FS210, and then all along upper 2, or at least I did, the rest of my group chickened out at the big ledge at the beginning of upper 2 :-) We also covered trail 4 intersection with 11, and 11 up to near guardrail, where there was a huge traffic jam. We then went to the other end of 11 near Helicopter Pad, and worked our way back down 11 to 3 and then 3 all the way to trail 4. I estimate we picked up about 6 or 8 contractor bags of trash. Also, on Friday, we cleaned up at the intersection of 3 and 10. I understood that 10 was to be closed, but there was no indication of that at this location. Also, 7 appeared to be open despite the FS letter to the contrary. Trail 9 and lower 2 appeared to have actual guardrails across the trail blocking anyone from using them. By the way, our group witnessed a couple of ATVers get $300 fines for no helmet, doubling up, and no OHV area pass. -- Herndon Elliott |
