Season 2

Proper Off-Road Spotting with Hand Signals

Episode 5

Proper spotting is essential to the safety of everyone around and the vehicle itself. A good spotter can help a driver get through obstacles they never could have driven on their own. Like any valuable skill, spotting takes practice to be able to guide the blind down the trail. Avoid real damage by following the best practices when spotting off road. Don’t be afraid to ask an observer to help. The observer will not communicate with the driver. Their sole function is to yell “Stop!” so you can signal the driver by hand. This is helpful when you are backing your driver up or trying to signal very minor adjustments. A Few Spotting Tips • As the driver of the vehicle if you are not confutable with the situation – STOP! • Stick with one designated spotter. • Make sure expectations of the obstacle are known. • Make sure both the spotter and the driver are comfortable with the obstacle and the relationship. • Remember it's all about enjoying the outdoors. Enjoy this SFWDA Tech Net where our master trainer, Mike Morrison talks to us about some valuable spotting tips and the standard hand signals.

Field Expedient Repairs

Season 1 Episode 14

OK, you have watched our SFWDA Tech Net videos and you are ready to get out there on the trail... Today’s vehicles are extremely reliable but what should you take with you just in case something fails or breaks. Know Your Stuff Michael Morrison from Morrison’s Outdoor Adventures and a certified I4WDTA instructor is going to help us adapt and overcome by outline your best approach to choosing which items to carry and which parts are most likely to fail?

Mike will also show us how to use many of his suggested items. That’s your starting point. From there, you can think about the “what ifs.” That’s to say, it’s good to carry what’s most likely to fail but you can’t solely go on that. Mike will help us wrap our heads around this a little deeper using the spare tire example. Tire failures are the most common failure on a vehicle, on road or off road. Whether it’s road debris, defect or abuse, you’ve probably experienced a flat tire at some point in your life. Tire failures are so common, that vehicles come with at least one spare tire and the simple tools needed to change them. You get the point. What about your battery? Ever had a dead battery? Needed a jump start because you left your lights on? Why not carry a battery? Or install an expensive and heavy dual battery setup?

Dan Grec.PNG

Just how do you start, a 10 year 94,000 mile journey?

Season 1 Episode 13

On this next episode of Tech Net we catch up with Dan Grec, an Engineer by trade and a Jeeper by heart, with a major passion for travel and adventure. But, just exactly how did Dan know that “The Road Chose Me” and decide to embark on the ultimate overlanding journey of a lifetime.

In 2009, he sold all his stuff, quit his job, and loaded up his gray Jeep Wrangler for 22 months along a 40,000-mile route that took him from the tip of North America to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina — the tip of South America.

And a little over a year ago, he concluded a 54,000-mile journey in a different Jeep, a 2011 Wrangler Rubicon. That Jeep was customized to hold a pop-up tent/bed and a kitchen, but the engine, drive-train, and other components were left all factory. That Jeep took him around the continent of Africa. He started in Morocco and three years and 35 countries later rolled into Cairo, Egypt.

Just how did Dan do it, how did he get started and what was the most interesting thing he saw along his journey? Join Mike and Alan LIVE this Thursday evening to learn all about it. Dan will talk with us about his love for overlanding and his background with Jeeps. Maybe he’ll even let us in what in store for his next adventure.
